Andrew C. Cook Farm, circa 1895 from an original watercolor by Betty Lusk Hughes! 

 

 

 

 

Wauconda Township Historical Society is currently offering only a few of these unique signed and numbered prints for the amazing price of $35.00.

 

 

Betty Lusk Hughes, the artist who painted this watercolor of the Andrew Cook farm ca. 1895 is the great great granddaughter of Andrew and Mary Cook. Her parents farmed on Darrell Road while Betty attended Wauconda Township High School. She went on to receive a degree in art education from the University of Illinois. Her award winning paintings have been shown in countless juried shows. Although she traveled far and wide as the wife of a career Marine Corps officer, her roots were always in Lake County. She belongs to a number of art organizations and still is a life member of the Wauconda Township Historical Society.

 

 

When the Historical Society asked if Betty would do a painting of the Cook house, as a fundraiser, she agreed. She wanted to represent the house as part of the rural farmstead it had been for almost 100 years following the Cook family's 1840 arrival from Vermont. They purchased 360 acres of land on the north edge of what would become the village of Wauconda. Standing in this brick farmhouse then, one could look out the windows in any direction and see Cook farmland. Betty referenced old photographs, her dad's vintage snapshots and map of the farm's layout in an effort to recreate the farmstead scene accurately.
